Jackpine Tour

Winter Wilderness Hike

Discover a wilderness paradise just outside the “Big City”. Designed by adventurers, for the adventurous!

This Yellowknife Tour will take you to the great Northern backcountry. From novice hikers, to outdoor enthusiasts, we’ll find a hike that suits your level of adventure. We specialize in off-the-beaten track hikes in smaller, custom groups. Whether you are looking for a scenic viewpoint or frozen winter waterfall, we’ll guide you through ancient rock outcrops and snowy spruce forests on an interpreted outdoor jaunt.

100% Northern-owned, our friendly guides call the North home. We are a true outdoor adventure company, and our experienced guides are top wilderness experts in Yellowknife. Guiding services are in English.

Duration: 3-4 hours, including a vehicle ride from your hotel to the hike and back in our rugged adventure van.

Time: You’ll need to be in the lobby of your hotel or accommodations at least 5 minutes before departure time, at 12 pm noon. Our guides will meet you there.

Route Options: We will recommend an option to your group depending on your ability & interests. Options are:

Winter Waterfall Hike: This beginner-friendly trail is easy to moderate and a round trip of 3 km. The cascade of Cameron Falls will be frozen to partially-frozen with scenic viewpoints along the hike. This hike is the furtherest distance from Yellowknife, a 45 min drive on the Ingraham Trail – a relaxing refuge from the modern world.

Ranney Hill Hike: This is a moderately strenuous 2.6 km round-trip hike through forested Canadian Shield leads to a spectacular of view of Yellowknife from Ranney Hill, a 100 foot summit along the historic West Bay Fault. This is a rambling route over jackpine-studded outcrops where you’ll experience the Precambrian frontier in all its glory. The trail head is a 15 min drive out of town.

We can also offer custom options for visitors looking for longer routes, including those keen on the big thrills of multi-day winter camping under the northern lights. If you are an experienced cross-country skier, we’ll love to show off some of our locally-loved routes.
