Elevated Outdoor Cuisine

We’ve fine-tuned a delicious, nutritious and well-balanced backcountry menu of unique and tasty dishes from years of expedition tripping – and look forward to sharing it with you. Our flexible menu can accommodate vegetarian, gluten-free preferences, and most food sensitivities.

You’ll be surprised with the fresh meats, specialty cheeses, and fruits/vegetables that will appear on your trip – even on expeditions up to 13 days long. Meals are hearty, but save room for dessert! Our dutch oven on all trips allows guides to bake up backcountry wonders such as cinnamon buns, chocolate cake, and lasagna.

We put the emphasis on local products, such as smoked fish from Great Slave Lake. We are proud to serve Barrenground Coffee: organic, fair trade, and small-batch roasted in Yellowknife – so we can serve up the freshest coffee in the Northwest Territories.

  • Breakfast will include fresh fruit and a main course, like eggs and bacon or blueberry pancakes.
  • Lunch features locally-smoked sausages, fruit, hummus, salads, breads and naan with a spread of cheese, jams, and a variety of nut butters.

Our Passion for great food

We genuinely enjoy the planning, packing, and preparation to create memorable meals for you. That shows in the unbelievable backcountry dishes we deliver.

We are keen to take advantage of the amazing fishing and berry-picking available on most of our trips (hopefully with your help if interested). Nothing beats being in the spectacular wilderness of the Canadian arctic, while enjoying fresh lake trout or arctic char off the grill. Or pancakes covered in freshly-picked cloudberries.

We often receive feedback from guests that our meals are well above what is expected. Check out our five-star reviews on TripAdvisor or Google.

canoe trip on the clarke and thelon river

Ate like kings and queens

In my 45 years of paddling barrenlands rivers, literally thousands of miles of Arctic canoeing, I have never before participated in a guided and fully outfitted canoe trip. But that time has come, and without a doubt it was a wise decision to go with Jackpine Paddle. Owner/operator Dan Wong led the trip with care and enthusiasm, keeping everyone (regardless of experience) safe at all times, but with equal attention to the group's morale and well-being. Quite simply, we had a great time, remained comfortable throughout, saw everything the river and the land had to offer, ate like kings and queens, and found ample time to relax while enjoying our surroundings and travelling companions. One could not ask for more. I will be back.

fishing and kayaking on great slave lake

The guides were outdoor gurus and incredible chefs and the wildlife and cliff views are stunning.

I kayaked the East Arm of Great Slave lake with Jackpine Paddle this August and it was one of the best kayak/camping trips ever! This company is local and their knowledge and love for the area is evident. The long summer days that ended with majestic sunsets and aurora sightings were beyond my expectations. Swimming in the cold, clear water was a total treat, not to mention the huge, fresh lake trout we had numerous times at meals. The north is simply entrancing...can't wait to go back.

camping meals for canoe trips

They prepared better than restaurant quality meals throughout.

North Arm of Great Slave Lake September 14 - 21, 2022. A trip that exceeded all my expectations. Our group of 8, almost all strangers, paddled 120 km along the shore and through the islands of the north arm. Our guides were so incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, always looking out for our best interests with a smile and positive energy.
